Prioritize host communities in recruitment — GCB Board Chairman tells mining firms

The Board Chairman of Ghana Commercial Bank, GCB, Professor Joshua Alabi, has urged mining companies to prioritize host communities when employing workers for both skilled and unskilled positions.

According to him, giving first consideration to indigenous people from communities where mining firms operate will create more job opportunities and ensure local residents benefit directly from mining activities.

Prof. Alabi made the call when he paid a working visit to the Azumah Mining Site, a facility belonging to Engineers and Planners in Nadoli Kaleo in the Upper West Region.
“As we try to create value from what we have, it is also important that we factor in the community. The first option should normally be given to members of the community, whether skilled or unskilled,” he said.
The Board Chairman said the visit was to understand the company’s operations and explore how GCB can support efforts to create more jobs.
He commended the mining firm for employing local residents and emphasized the need for all mining companies to strengthen local content in their operations.
