Dissolve Orphanages in the country – Social Welfare

The Social Welfare Department and Department of Community Development in collaboration with Child the Protection agency are calling for the dissolution or reduction of orphanages in the country which produce alternative care for destitute children.

The Ashanti regional director of Department of Community Development Miss. Janet Gyamfua Amonu who made this revelation said research has revealed that a lot of children who were raised by these homes become wicked and have no sympathy for other people in the society because they were not treated with love and kindness.

“The Social Welfare Department and Department of Community Development in collaboration with Child Protection want to dissolve or reduce these alternative care centers because research indicates that children who grew up from these homes have no sympathy,” she said.

Speaking to Otec FM during a Five (5) days workshop for social Welfare workers within Nine (9) Districts in the Ashanti region, she stated that Children in most orphanage  across the country are not being catered for properly because managers of such homes fail to treat the children as their own.

According to her, there is an urgent need for government and Gender Ministry to limit the number of Homes and orphanages to help address the situation, adding that, it is a responsibility of family and community to protect children who have lost their parents rather than sending them to orphanages.

“Sometimes when you visit some of the homes and you will not hear a child crying but that doesn’t mean that the children are calm. It is not normal for about 10 children to be in a room and none of them will cry, it is not normal and it shouldn’t happen that way,” he noted.

“Perhaps they have being crying and nobody is attending to them so they have come to understand that we should sit there like that or if we defecate nobody will attend to us so we should stay quiet so the children being calm does not necessarily mean they are well cared for,” she added.

Miss Janet Gyamfua therefore urged parents to caution their children on the use of the internet particularly against pornographic materials which could end them in fornication, homosexuality and even become addicted.
