Onwe SHS cries for furniture for form 1 students; truancy and other issues coming up

Some students bending over to do their class work at Onwe SHS in the Ejisu Municipality

The unavailability of furniture especially desks for students at the Onwe Senior High School in the Ejisu Municipality is becoming a big issue.

Many of the students who gained admission and are in Form 1 have had to either stand or bend over the desks of fortunate colleagues who would be siting so they could write or join the lessons in class.

During a visit on Monday to ascertain reports on our stables about the school, this reporter was faced with the reality.

In one class the tables and chairs were not up to twenty (20) to cater for the number of students at same.

Many students wore sullen faces with some profusely sweating due to the heat from standing for long hours.

The environment alone in the clasrooms could not get students to fully concentrate and follow lessons.

Information:

A staff who wants to remain anonymous said attendance had been going down since the issue came up.

Some parents, she said have regretted allowing their wards into the school.

She further disclosed that some parents are reported to be planning on taking their wards out of the school.

Details:

The staff revealed that many of the students who live close in the Ejisu community as well as adjoining ones have decided to choose when to be present for academic activity.

This, the staff noted was the cause of the less numbers this reporter saw in the Form 1 classes.

Students:

A student who corroborated the happenings in the school, said at times due to the uncomfortable environment lessons are paused.

“Many of our colleagues have become truant and others are contemplating staying at the house entirely if the situation persist”, the student narrated.

Headmistress:

The Headmistress who was unavailable at the time of our visit was said to be getting worried over the issue.

Our source said she has been using her influence to get the attention of the Ghana Education Service but nothing has been seen yet.

The uncomfortable situation, the source said forces the Headmistress to stay out of the school most times as she tries to lobby stakeholders to support the school.
