President Mahama engages civil society on proposed Governance Advisory Council

President John Dramani Mahama has held a high-level meeting with representatives of various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to deliberate on the formation of a proposed Governance Advisory Council, a key promise from his 2024 presidential campaign.
The meeting, which took place in Accra, forms part of broader efforts by the Mahama administration to enhance transparency, accountability, and integrity in Ghana’s governance architecture.
In a post on his official Facebook page after the engagement, President Mahama described the Council as an “independent watchdog” tasked with monitoring human rights, corruption, and general governance in the country.

“The Governance Advisory Council is intended to enhance accountability and transform our governance system,” he said. “It will monitor the state of human rights, corruption, and governance and produce an annual report to foster transparency and drive progress.”
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a transparent and accountable government that reflects the values of Ghanaians, emphasising that the Council will operate independently to ensure credibility and trust.

Civil society groups have long advocated for a robust oversight mechanism to check executive excesses and strengthen institutional integrity. The establishment of the Governance Advisory Council, if realised, is expected to formalise that role and provide a platform for collaboration between government and civic actors.
President Mahama urged all stakeholders to support the initiative, stating, “Let’s build the Ghana we want together.”
