Bank of Ghana terminates appointments of over 100 staff hired in 2024

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has terminated the appointments of more than 100 staff members who were employed in 2024.

The affected staff received official notices of dismissal on Thursday, 19 June 2025, Asaase News has gathered.

The letters, signed by Mrs Lucy Sasu, Head of the Human Resource and Capacity Development Department, cited the bank’s employment terms regarding probation as the basis for the action.

“In accordance with the terms of your contract of employment, a satisfactory six (6) month probationary period was to be completed. Management regrets to inform you that your appointment cannot be confirmed,” the termination notice stated.

The letters further indicated that the employees’ contracts would officially end on Monday, 23 June 2025, with one month’s salary in lieu of notice to be provided.

Staff were instructed to return all bank property to the Human Resource Department by that date.

The move forms part of what appears to be a broader wave of dismissals within state institutions since the change in government in January 2025.

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, MP for Tafo, highlighted the situation on social media.

“The termination of appointments continues unabated, with some BOG workers receiving dismissal letters today.”

There has been no official statement from the central bank’s leadership beyond the contents of the individual dismissal letters.

It remains unclear whether additional rounds of terminations are planned.

The affected employees, many of whom were brought on board last year, now face uncertainty amid a challenging economic climate.

The Chief of Staff, at the Office the President, Julius Debrah, on 11 February 2025, a little over a month after the John Mahama administration took office, directed the annulment of all public sector appointments and recruitment made after December 7, 2024, citing non-compliance with good governance practices and principles.

In a letter addressed to all heads of government institutions, the Chief of Staff noted that such last-minute appointments were inconsistent with the government’s stated position on end-of-tenure recruitment.

“Consistent with government pronouncements in relation to near end-of-tenure appointments and recruitment, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitment made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7 December 2024, are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles,” portions of the letter stated.
