Western Region:  Six escape death after canoe capsized on Samre River

Six individuals nearly drowned last week at Samreboi in the Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region after a canoe transporting them across the River Samre was washed away.

Residents are forced to cross the river using the canoe as their only means of passage, following the collapse and abandonment of the Amoaku Bridge.

According to the footage captured by witnesses at the time of the event which happened n Saturday October 18, 2025, the canoe was carrying commuters from one town to the opposite end of the river.

The canoe abruptly began to sink while all six individuals were on board in the middle of the river

The residents when they realized the canoe was sinking, stepped in to help save the situation

No casualties were recorded, but the lack of a safe crossing has led to significant discomfort for commuters and is causing concern among farmers who cannot transport their goods to market.

The community is urging the government to reconstruct the bridge to ensure a safe and reliable crossing.
