A/R: Manso Akwasiso residents appeal for new electricity transformer to boost development

Residents of Manso Akwasiso, a farming community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, have appealed to the government to provide them with a new electricity transformer to enhance socio-economic activities.

The community says the existing transformer, installed by Asanko Gold Mining as a temporary solution, is no longer capable of meeting the area’s growing power demand.

According to the residents, the transformer initially supplied by the government was destroyed after being overloaded due to the community’s expansion.

Since then, they have depended on the one provided by the mining company, which they say has become overstressed, resulting in frequent low voltage and power outages.

These challenges, they explained, have disrupted local businesses, spoiled electrical appliances, and slowed domestic and economic activities.

“We are pleading with the government and the Electricity Company of Ghana to come to our aid. The voltage is too low, and sometimes we stay in darkness for days,” one resident lamented during a communal labour exercise.

The community further appealed for the extension of electric poles to unconnected areas, stressing that reliable access to electricity is vital for improving livelihoods.

The appeal was made on Monday, November 3, 2025, during a communal labour session to continue work on a community centre currently under construction.

The project, initiated and financed through the self-help contributions of residents and well-wishers, is expected to serve as a multipurpose facility for social gatherings, training programmes, and other development activities.

However, residents noted that the full benefits of the centre could not be realised without adequate electricity supply.

“We are building this centre to bring development to Manso Akwasiso, but without power, we cannot use gadgets or lights for our meetings and events,” another resident said.

They are therefore calling for urgent government intervention to ensure reliable power supply for the community’s continued growth.
