Ghana’s courts inundated with cases -Justice Baffoe-Bonnie

Chief Justice nominee, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has expressed concern over the growing backlog of cases in the country’s courts, describing the situation as overwhelming and a major source of delay in justice delivery.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said the courts are “inundated” with cases, leading to congestion and inefficiency.
He assured that measures will be introduced under his leadership to address the situation.
He noted that while the Judicial Service has opened more courts to ease congestion, the problem persists because the number of cases continues to rise across the country.
“We must identify what causes the backlog and delays. Courtroom litigation volume has increased. Now people litigate practically over everything. People sue over everything, intellectual property, and everything.
He added, “So the courts are inundated. We tried to solve that problem by opening more courts. The more courts are opened, the more litigations come up. Now, courts in Adenta have more cases than courts in the Law Court Complex.
“The threshold for every court should be about 250. At the last count, the High Court One in Adenta had 849 cases, for one court. So the cases are many. You will be dealing with one case, and two more are added.”
His vetting follows the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. The Minority in Parliament had earlier resisted the vetting process, citing pending court cases challenging her removal.
