Teachers, invigilators among 43 arrested over BECE malpractice

43 individuals, including teachers, invigilators and supervisors, have been arrested for allegedly aiding examination malpractice during the just-ended 2026 Basic  Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the suspects were arrested at various examination centres across the country following intelligence gathered through tip-offs from whistleblowers and members of the public.

Speaking to Citi News on Tuesday, May 12, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, disclosed that investigations into the malpractice cases are ongoing, with further details expected after the marking of scripts is completed.

He explained that the Council will later identify candidates who may have benefited from the alleged cheating schemes once the full review process is concluded.

Despite the numerous reported cases of examination malpractice, WAEC believes the growing level of public cooperation and whistleblowing reflects the impact of sustained public education and awareness campaigns against exam-related offences.

The Council has meanwhile reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the BECE and warned that individuals found culpable in examination malpractice will face the appropriate sanctions under existing regulations.
