NPP UK defends London protest, cites threats to press freedom and unemployment in Ghana

The Director of Communications for NPP UK Kwaku Bimpeh has defended Sunday’s demonstration against President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC government, saying the protest was triggered by recent arrests of NPP members and high unemployment levels in Ghana.

Ghanaian nationals staged a vocal protest outside the Dominion Centre in London on Sunday, May 31, 2026, while President Mahama was engaging hundreds of Ghanaians at a Diaspora Town Hall meeting.

The event formed part of a high-level working visit that included meetings with King Charles III and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Speaking to Dr. Cash on Kumasi-based OTEC FM’s afternoon political show Dwabrem on Monday, the NPP UK Director said the group acted because they believe press freedom is under threat in Ghana.

According to him, “We in the UK have been following keenly things in Ghana, and we know press freedom is under threat in the country.”

He further questioned the government’s actions: “Here in the UK we have free speech, so why is the NDC government allowing security agencies to arrest individuals for speaking their mind?”

He noted that the protestors used the opportunity to present a petition to the President.

“We handed over our petition to the Minister of Government and Minister of State, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, and we are hoping the problems raised will be addressed,” he added.

The Presidency has not yet issued a formal response to the petition.
