Bosome Freho: Mother and her 6-month-old baby drown in abandoned galamsey pit at Bobeam

A woman and her six-month-old child have tragically lost their lives after drowning in an abandoned galamsey pit at Bobeam, a community in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region.

Residents who spoke to OTEC news Reporter Kwame Agyenim on Monday said the sad incident occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

According to residents, the deceased, was a northerner who had moved to the community with her husband, Fuseini, some time ago to engage in farming.

She was left behind with three children while her husband worked on their farm.

According to reports, the deceased had gone to fetch water when she slipped and fell into the unprotected pit with her six-month-old child still strapped to her back.

Her nine-year-old son witnessed the incident.

Eyewitness Akua Boakyewaa recounted the moments after the incident:

“Her nine-year-old son rushed to the family’s farm to inform his father. But by the time they arrived at the scene, both the mother and child had already drowned.”

Illegal mining remains widespread in the area, with several abandoned pits left uncovered.

Residents say these open pits pose a serious danger, especially to women, children, and farmers who move around the community daily.

The deaths have left the Bobeam community in shock and mourning.

Residents are calling on authorities and mining regulators to urgently reclaim and cover abandoned galamsey pits to prevent further loss of lives.
