Transport fare hikes fueling food inflation in Ashanti Region – Kumasi residents cry out
Some members of the public in the Kumasi Metropolis have disclosed that the indiscriminate increase in transport fares by commercial transport operators has caused food inflation in the Ashanti Region.
According to them, prices of food have surged at an alarming rate, with vendors attributing the surge to high transport costs.
This came to light when the OTEC News desk visited the central business district of Kumasi on Sunday, September 20, 2026, to engage some traders.
“I am pleading with authorities to regulate transport fares, because it is really affecting our daily lives, particularly prices of food,” one trader lamented.
“I buy my goods from Wa, transportation for the goods was relatively low until drivers decided to increase the fares without any prior notice. Now I have to pay double the transportation cost for the same food items from Wa to Kumasi. This affects the prices, forcing consumers to pay more money to afford the food,” another trader said.
“I am a food vendor and I can tell you this problem of transport fare hikes must be checked. Now prices of food items are high because of the transport fares, I really wish government can do something about this problem,” a vendor added.
The public has urged government to reduce taxes on fuel prices if necessary to check transport fares.
