Sanitation: Asafo residents call for heaped refuse containers evacuated

Residents of Asafo Electoral Area in the Kumasi metropolis fear a possible outbreak of sanitation-related diseases if city authorities do not take immediate steps to evacuate a heaped refuse in the area.
The angry residents say, the stench emanating from the abandoned refuse is affecting their health and business in the area.
The refuse has been left uncollected for the past two months despite paying before dumping.
The container, which is situated in the middle of the community, is full to the brim, compelling people to dump on the ground.
Aside the unbearable stench residents battle, with the place has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Several efforts to get city authorities to empty the refuse container have not been successful.
An aspiring assembly member for the area, Ernest Okai, in an interview with Otec News’ Francis Appiah on Friday, September 7, 2018, appealed to the city authorities to address the situation to prevent possible outbreak of diseases like typhoid, cholera and malaria.
“Residents here have been paying for their refuse dumps, so it’s the city authorities to fulfill their part of making sure the containers are emptied for good sanitation environment. The containers at Zion School and other areas are full, and the grounds are now used, which can cause an outbreak of diseases,” he said.
“The Assembly member for the area, Hon. Akua Achiaa has done her best in improving the sanitation condition, but she needs the support of the residents, I therefore urge the resident to keep the area clean by not littering around,” the broadcast journalist appealed.
