EPA launches the phase 2 development

The Environmental Protection Agency launched the phase (2) developmental program on 17th March 2022 onto the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS).

The Executive Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Hon. Dr Kwabena Kokofu gives out in his speech that, The Trade Association of their continuous support in the implementation of Act 917. The journey began in 2018 after the passage of the Hazardous and Electronic Waste Control and Management.

Electrical and Electronic Waste (e-waste) is rapidly globally which demands that we take full responsibility and appropriate measures to address it sustainably. The establishment of the legal framework for the management of electronic waste has afforded us, the country, the opportunity, to correct the wrong of our inaction to the menace of e-waste.

Since the launch of the Ghana E-Waste programme by H.E The president, Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo on 29th August 2018, several steps have been taken to get the programme running smoothly and to get necessary resources for the management of e-waste in Ghana.

The EPA in 2018 started the collection of advanced recycling levy (eco-levy) on all electrical and electronic items and tyres imported into Ghana. It is also instructive to the note that Act 917 has allocated a percentage of the funds accrued towards the sound environmental recycling incentives to e-waste value-chain actors such as collectors, dismantlers, and recyclers of e-waste.

In our efforts to expand the collection of advanced recycling levy (eco-levy) and to ensure greater responsibility by manufacturers, the EPA will soon commence the development an Extended Producer Responsibility and Take-back Scheme, where manufacturers of these electrical and electronic equipment and tyres will play an active role in supporting our National Integrated Management of Hazardous Electronic Waste in Ghana.

On this note Ladies and Gentlemen, I declare phase two (2) which is the remaining 300HS code dully launched with support from all the relevant Trade Association present.
