KMA locks 15 shops for not paying daily tax

Authorities of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have today locked up fifteen shops at the Kumasi Central Market for failing to pay daily toll tax.
The shops were closed by the Revenue Department of the assembly because the owners failed to pay the new tax rate of GHC 2.
According to the owners, they were previously paying 50p and it was increased to 1 cedi, but wondered why they should be paying GHC 2 without prior notice.
“ when the KMA tax collectors came they said they are collecting 2 cedis, but previously some of us were paying 50p and the traders anonymously decided to pay 1 cedi, so we don’t know the reason why today they are collecting 2 cedis,” one owner angrily said.
Speaking to Otec news’ reporter Simon Opoku Afriyie, who was at the scene, the traders said they will go all length to reverse the new GHC 2, if they have to go to Flagstaff House, the seat of government.
