The fights started three days ago when some youth from the Zongo community joined another group in the Asante community who were mourning a dead sister.

The joint military and police team have been deployed to help bring peace to the area as there were series of reprisal attacks from both sides this morning.

Several are reported injured in the violent clashes between Muslim youth and some youths in the town over a misunderstanding between the two youth group.

According to OTECNEWS’ Nana Asare Barimah who is currently at the scene, the indigenes had prevented the Zongo youth from participating in a party the previous day leading to the brawl.

Wielding machetes, clubs, knives and hammers, irate Muslim youth who claimed to be fighting a jihad, violently and indiscriminately assaulted anyone they could find on the streets.

Nana Asare Barimah reported that Police in the region are firing of warning shots to calm the situation.

The injured persons have been taken to Tafo Government Hospital for treatment and the law enforcement officers have arrested some individuals in connection with the attacks.

It is unclear yet what had triggered the incident but everything went bad on the celebration grounds and became worse Saturday.

Sources say it may have stemmed from a long-standing dispute that has existed between both factions for years.

The early hours of Saturday saw the situation develop into a more chaotic one, forcing residents to return to the various homes.

Roads were also closed to traffic and commuters had to walk from long distances to work.
