Handle Cedi notes with care – BOG tells Ghanaians
The head of currency for Bank of Ghana, Edward Musey has appealed to Ghanaians to handle the cedi notes with care to ensure they are well preserved.
According to him, the way and manner in which most Ghanaians handle the Ghana cedi notes especially at the various markets and transaction points is very appalling, and needs to change.
He entreated Ghanaians to make it a duty to preserve and protect the notes because it belongs to all of us.
Edward Musey told otec news that the Bank of Ghana (BOG) spends huge sums a month to replace bank notes that are mutilated by poor handling practices such as tearing, crumpling, frequent folding, burning and soiling with dirt, oil and other fluids.
He therefore, advised Ghanaians, particularly, cooked food sellers, traders, drivers and mechanics to cherish their cedi notes and preserve their freshness so as to increase their lifespan.
“We must desist from crumpling our notes and handling them with wet and dirty fingers,” he cautioned.
The Bank of Ghana as part of its 60th anniversary will print commemorative GH¢5 notes.
Dr. Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku, Governor of the Bank of Ghana told the media at the first Monetary Policy Committee press conference for 2017, “It is visibly the same notes with enhanced security features.
We always print notes and we would have printed it anyway based on our forecast for new notes.”
“It just happened that this is our 60th year as a central bank so we are just labeling the notes and adding some features so that when you pick one of the new GH¢5 you would know that this is the 60th year of the central bank.”
He further said printing of the new note is a normal process of currency management.
