Atwima-Kwanwoma: Farmers laud free mass cocoa spraying exercise
Farmers in the Atwima-Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti Region have commended the District Chief Executive for area for initiating the mass cocoa spraying exercise, which they said had began to yield fruitful results.
They said the yield of individual farms has increased appreciably resulting in the steady increase in the income of farmers, Chief Farmer for Biragokrom, Nana Kwadwo Asamoah told the District Chief Executive for ATWIMA KWANWOMA in the Ashanti Region, Nana Okyere Tawiah when the DCE visited some farms in the area last Friday.
He said the transparency adopted by the government in the sector had helped to check the tendency of some cocoa purchasing clerks to cheat unsuspecting farmers.
Nana Kwadwo Asamoah described the DCE’s support as unprecedented and assured him of high yield of cocoa production in the district.
The farmers called for the supply of Wellington boots and other protective cloths for members of the mass spraying teams to ensure their safety, and also additional incentives and prompt payment of their wages to enhance their performance.
Hon. Okyere Tawiah visited Nwiniso N° 1, Biragokrom, among others and personally supervised the spraying exercise covering over 100 acres of cocoa farms.
Explaining the rationale behind it, he stated it is the ambition of the Assembly to ensure the district leads in the production of cocoa in the region and would not hesitate to take every measures to assist the farmers to realize the government’s policy on mass cocoa production in the country.
“There is no political inclination towards the exercise and I advise the farmers to follow every instruction given by the Agric officers which h OK we would boost their production”, he said.
The D.C.E called on the farmers not to leave their lands to galamsey operators to the detriment of their cocoa farms and the future generation.
He challenged the youth to take to farming and should not leave it in the hands of the aged.
