Mahama attends Ya Na coronation

Former President John Mahama is in Yendi to witness the coronation of the new Overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari Mahama II.
Also at the ceremony are the Chairman and General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and Johnson Asiedu Nketia, respectively.
The investiture of the overlord is expected to bring to an end the protracted chieftaincy dispute between the Abudu and Andani royal families.
Following the killing of the late Ya Na Yakubu Andani II in 2002, the John Agyekum Kufuor government set up a Committee of Eminent Chiefs led by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to help find a solution to the crisis.
The committee in November 2018 presented a final road map for peace to President Nana Akufo-Addo. The road map also led to the successful performance of the funerals of Ya Na Abdulai and Ya Na Andani.
The kingmakers of Dagbon eventually selected Ya Na Abubakari Mahama II as the new overlord of the Dagbon traditional area.
Ahead of the coronation, Mr Mahama wrote on Facebook: “Dagbang will today showcase the rich tradition and culture of our people.”
In an earlier post, Mr Mahama said the peace in Dagbon is as a result of the collective efforts of successive governments. “Working together, the Eminent Chiefs appointed to help resolve the very challenging Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, the Andani and Abudu Royal Families and the people of Ghana, this major success has been achieved and we have a new Ya Na.”
President Nana Akufo-Addo and his entourage arrived for the coronation on Thursday.
