Maintain existing fares – GPRTU to drivers

The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) has condemned the arbitrary increase of transport fares by some commercial drivers in the country.
The GPRTU said the action of such drivers is “unfortunate”.
The drivers increased the fares because, according to them, the price of fuel on the international market, has fallen drastically but prices remain the same at the pumps in Ghana despite the government’s directive to drivers to pick fewer passengers as part of social-distancing protocols to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
But the GPRTU, in a statement, said: “We wish to make it clear that there are procedures for the determination of transport fares in the country. One of the major items considered during a fare review is the price of petroleum products which have seen some reductions since the last transport fare increase in September 2019.”
The GPRTU has, thus, advised all of its members to maintain the existing transport fares and adhere to the laid-down procedures for the determination of transport fares.
