Covid-19: Ghana records 5 more new deaths as active cases jump to 3,613

Five more people have died from COVID-19 in Ghana with the death toll now 372, according to the Ghana Health Service.

Active cases have also jumped to 3,613 with 646 cases recorded.

Ghana has so far recorded a total of 62,135cases with 58,150recoveries and discharges.

Meanwhile, more than 25 million cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed across the United States.

Experts say the true number is likely to be higher. More than 417,500 in the US have died with the virus.

The daily number of deaths has exceeded 4,000 in recent weeks – including on Wednesday when Joe Biden was sworn into office.

All 16 regions have now recorded coronavirus cases – GHS

The Ghana Health Service  today Monday January 25, 2021 confirmed that all 16 regions have confirmed cases of coronavirus.

This was disclosed by the GHS’ Director General, Dr Patrick Aboagye during a media briefing at the Ministry of Information in Accra.

The figures show that the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Western regions are the most impacted in that order. Accra has more than half of the total caseload which has passed the 60,000 mark.

“Positivity rate for the airport continues to rise, that is if you look at the airports alone. But it is the cumulative positivity that is 0.65 but if you them month by month you can see there is an increasing trend in the positivity rate,” Dr. Aboagye said during his briefing.

There is possibility of a lockdown – Oppong Nkrumah

Information Minister-designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said that if the upward trend of the coronavirus infection in Ghana persists, the president will have no option but to lock down the country.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah who is also Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, addressing the media on Monday, January 25 said “There is a possibility of a lockdown and other restrictions. If this trend continues, then yes that is where we are heading.
