Kumasi: Ghanaian deportee from Germany commits suicide after being swindled

A 45-year-old Ghanaian deportee from Germany, Mr Eric Akwasi Hagan, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Ohwim-Hwidiem in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 26 August 2021.

The man, allegedly hanged himself with a rope tied to a ceiling fan in his house.

The Assembly Member for the area, Mr Erastus Ebo, told otecnews that the deceased was deported from Germany last year and decided to return to the European country through a ‘connection man’.

He said the ‘connection man’, after taking the money, bolted, plunging the deportee into depression.

Mr Ebo said the swindling may have been a contributory factor to the deportee’s suicide.

He said the body of the man has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The Bohyen police command has commenced investigations into the incident.

A total of 417 attempted suicide cases were recorded in the country for the first half of the year, the Deputy Director of Mental Health at Ghana Health Service, Dr Amma Ampomaa Boadu, disclosed recently.

The Ashanti Region topped with 61 cases followed by the Eastern Region with 60 cases.
