Kumasi Mayor Educates Drivers, Urges Them To Reduce Transport Fares
The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon Samuel Pyne has advised road users especially vehicle drivers, traders and pedestrians to consciously do things that can prevent deaths that occur through lorry accidents.
Addressing these groups at three lorry terminals during a float in the central business district(CBD) of Kumasi in a sensitization exercise organised by Bloomberg Philantrophies in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police Service and other stakeholders, the Kumasi Mayor called for attitudinal change from all road users.
The Mayor noted that many deaths that has happened as a result of road crashes and accidents could have been prevented if road users especially drivers had the right kind of attitude
“Today I am here to plead that we do our best to reduce the carnage on our roads by putting up behaviours that would forestall the occurrence of deaths through accidents”, the Mayor stated.
Caution:
The Kumasi Mayor urged traders at the CBD including hawkers not to trade on pedestrian walk ways or places that would make accidents happen easily.
He also asked drivers and their mates not to load on the streets of the CBD since that has occasioned many crashes.
The Mayor also called on pedestrians to be observant when using the road by taking all precautions necessary to safeguard their Iives.
“I humbly urge that while we use the road we take all precautions necessary to prevent accidents and to preserve the lives of others so that collectively we can have very active members in the society to build Ghana”, the Mayor stressed.
Appeal:
Hon Pyne later during the interaction with the vehicle users appealed to them to reduce the transport fares to the levels as announced by the Joint Committee on Transport.
He said just as when things go up on the market transport unions and drivers are given the chance to increase fares to agreed levels they should do likewise when reduction is announced.
The Mayor noted that government was mindful of the happenings in the country and that was why it sits with transport unions to fix a fee that is agreeable by parties that form the committee.
“I have information that drivers in the City and elsewhere across the region have refused to reduce transport fares as announced but I would plead that you do so now because just as you increase the fares when there is an agreement for that it is only fair to do same once reductions are announced”, the Mayor appealed.
