Kumasi Mayor commends Bloomberg Philanthropies for their continued support of road safety initiatives

Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Sam Pyne, has commended Bloomberg Philanthropies, USA, for their continued support of road safety initiatives for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

He said the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIRGS) partnership has ensured a significant decrease in road traffic accidents in Kumasi and its environs.

Hon. Sam Pyne disclosed that the provision of speed barometers to the MTTD, support in speed awareness campaigns, engagement and sensitization of the Media, Police, Metro Guards, Transport Unions among others on road safety and crashes in the local level has assist the assembly in the road safety campaign.

The Kumasi Mayor made the commendation when Ms Rebecca Bavinger from Bloomberg Philanthropies, USA, paid a courtesy call on him at his office on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

“I am glad to inform you that KMA has completed the Education stage and is embarking on Enforcement, and the assembly has arrested and prosecuted about 600 offenders in various offences on road and traffic in the metropolis so far,” Sam Pyne told Ms Bavinger.

“As a way of prioritizing road safety in the metropolis, the KMA is also working together with a host of road safety partners including Vital Strategies, NRSA and BRRI among others”, he added.

On the hand, Ms. Rebecca Bavinger expressed surprised to learn that the KMA was at the enforcement road safety prioritization, according to her, other institutions are presently at the education stage.

She added that it was encouraging to learn that their unwavering support to the city is having a positive impact on the city.

Ms. Bavinger pointed out that “our unwavering support to the city and in extension the Mayor was born out of the fact that the Mayor was the administrative head of the City and that he could reach the populace or the local people to address the grievances and promote their livelihood”.

Ms. Rebecca Bavinger was also in Kumasi to attend the Joint Launch of the Kumasi Status Summary Report and Speed Management Plan at the Lancaster Hotel.
