Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers announce cash and carry system for all schools and bookshops

The Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers (GNAAP) has announced a cash and carry system for all schools and bookshops in the country.

According to the association all schools and bookshops who want to transact business with them will have to make a down payment before the books are delivered on a 25 percent discount

The National President for GNAAP, John AKwasi Amponsah announced this on Thursday May 9, 2024 during a press conference at the Center for National Culture in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region.

Addressing the media, Mr Amponsah revealed that the decision has been informed by the introduction of 27.5 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on stationary.

He noted that, other factors such as, high inflation, unstable exchange rate, and charges at the port books including Covid-19 Health Recovery levy, Ghana Health Service GHS Disinfection Fee, Special Import among others are also part of the reason for their decision.

He bemoaned the rate at which some punishing companies are collapsing due to numerous taxes on the publishing industry.

“The Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers cannot sit unconcerned for the books industry to fall out of business especially seeing the critical role books play in the social construct of our dear nation and its contribution to the growth of our economy”.

“In order to keep  industry players from going out of business (b) and ensure commitment to producing quality and globally competitive books for local and international consumption, the Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers wishes to inform the general public especially school owners, parent-teacher associations, heads of schools, book sellers and all stakeholders in the book industry that:

With effect from September 2024, Cash and carry system shall be the mainstream policy regarding the sales of books at 25% discount.

Credit for bulk purchases in exceptional cases shall not extend beyond 40 days from the time of purchase and delivery at a discount of 10%”, he said
