A Senior Lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Dr. Samuel Afriyie, has criticized the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Ghana, Reverend Dr. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, for using the church’s platform to engage in partisan politics.
As a member of the church, Dr. Afriyie has urged the leadership to address Dr. Wengam’s recent politicization of the church to prevent divisions among members.
Dr. Afriyie, a panel member on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show Nyansapo on Thursday August 1, 2024, appealed to stakeholders and identifiable groups within the church to call their leader to order.
“While I acknowledge the good works of Dr. Wengam, he has to stop politicizing the church, so I am urging our leaders to help stop this,” he told the programme’s host Captain Koda.
Dr Afriyie highlighted the delicate balance between religion and politics, emphasizing the need for religious leaders to maintain neutrality and avoid exploiting their influence for political gain.
I am speaking out due o my concern for the church and I hope this will prompt a constructive dialogue within the church and ensure that its focus remains on spiritual guidance rather than political agendas”.
