Power Play: Political Interest fueling illegal Mining–Small Scale Miners
The National Association of Small Scale Miners has made a shocking revelation that some political figures are secretly sponsoring illegal mining activities on Ghana’s water bodies.
Small Scale Miners Association sounds alarm, demanding immediate halt to illegal mining ravaging Ghana’s water bodies, vowing to patrol mining areas and arrest perpetrators to protect the environment.
According to the association, these politicians are providing equipment and materials to desperate young individuals, mostly foreigners, to destroy water bodies and gain an advantage in the 2024 elections.
The association’s task force on Wednesday September 11,2024 stormed River Mankran in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region, uncovering the extent of the illegal activities.
Council of Elders member, Kwame Agyeman, told OTEC News Reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng disclosed that locals who led them to the sites revealed that most illegal miners are not from the area.
Adu noted that these foreigners recruit locals to target river bodies, causing environmental destruction.
He emphasized that the Small Scale Miners Association will not stand by and allow illegal miners to destroy the environment, and their task force will patrol all mining areas to arrest the perpetrators.
This revelation raises concerns about the involvement of political figures in illegal mining activities and their potential impact on the environment and the upcoming elections.
