Galamsey: PUWU-TUC joins Organised Labour’s nationwide strike

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of TUC-Ghana has announced its decision to join the nationwide strike set for Thursday, October 10, 2024.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company on Tuesday, October 8, the Union confirmed its participation, stating that all members, except those in the Production and Maintenance Units, will take part in the industrial action.

This decision is part of a larger initiative by Organised Labour to pressure the government to address urgent issues, including the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).

“At a meeting held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, in the Hall of Trades Union Conference Room in Accra, the leadership of Organised Labour resolved to embark on a nationwide strike action over issues related to illegal small-scale mining.

“This decision was further affirmed during another meeting on October 7, 2024, at the Hall of Trades Union. In light of this, we are writing to officially notify you that PUWU and all its members, with the exception of the Production and Maintenance Units, will join the nationwide strike starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, as outlined in the attached statement.”

Organised Labour has confirmed the strike in response to the government’s failure to address the galamsey crisis, following earlier warnings of industrial action if their demands were not met.
