Dr Dacosta Aboagye, the Acting CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has revealed that under the government’s comprehensive plan, dialysis will be permanent on the NHIS benefits package from 1st December.
He also noted that as a measure to offer optimal treatment for such cases more dialysis machines were being procured to support the policy.
Speaking to this reporter at the sidelines of Dr Mahamodu Bawumia’s tour of the Ashanti Region, the NHIA CEO stated that the Govt will assist in the kidney transplant for patients as captured in NPP’s Manifesto.

Dr Dacosta also disclosed that there would be free medical checks at Wellness Clinics across Ghana.
This measure, he stressed will minimize the increasing burden of chronic diseases like Chronic Renal Failure and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
The Acting stated NCDs could be prevented, adding that the NHIA will promote healthy lifestyles.
The public, he noted would be encouraged to visit the hospital so that ailments could be detected early and treated.
“Diseases like hypertension and diabetes are the main causes of chronic renal diseases and the plan by government is to encourage the public to attend to care early and get these diseases treated early”, the CEO intimated.

Dr Dacosta said government intends to pass the tissue, organ donation, storage and transplantation law to guide kidney and other organs transplantation in the country.
He noted that the policy is ready and undergoing stakeholder consultation for cabinet and Parliamentary approval for the law to be passed by the next parliament.
“We are looking at the issue of Chronic Renal Failure and other Chronic Diseases holistically”, the Acting CEO stated.
