Immigration vehicle crush 2 to death; angry residents set car ablaze in Oti Region
An Immigration Authority vehicle with registration number GI 441, assigned to the Menuso border, crushed two teenagers to death on Wednesday evening at Okanta, a suburb of Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
The victims, a motor mechanic apprentice and a makeup artist apprentice were returning home after work when the accident occurred.
The vehicle reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle but veered into the lane of the duo, resulting in a fatal collision.
Eyewitnesses report that police and immigration personnel arrived quickly at the scene, but their presence angered residents.
By the time JoyNews arrived, the Immigration Authority vehicle had been set on fire. Some residents, speaking off-record, claimed that comments made by the officers provoked the crowd.
The vehicle was allegedly driven by the immigration commander for the Menuso border.
Fire service personnel were unable to respond effectively, as their fire truck had been out of service for months.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the hospital for preservation. They are expected to be buried on Thursday, December 12, 2024, in accordance with Islamic customs.
