National Blood Service Presents Blood Separation Equipment To KATH Transfusion Unit
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Blood Service (NBS), Dr Shirley Owusu-Ofori has presented a Centrufuge Heraeus Cryofuge equipment to KATH.
The equipment is a modern blood processing and separation machine that would serve the needs of the Medicine Transfusion Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Presenting the equipment, the CEO of NBS said the machine had the potential to process and separate blood components so that it can be used to attend to different needs at the unit including tissue recovery.
Dr Owusu-Ofori said patients who may need blood would now have access to same in high quality levels.
“Together with my Board Members, we are here to present this blood processing equipment to KATH so that it can be of use to the Transfusion unit which is now the regional blood centre due to a recent calibration by the National Blood Service”, the CEO stated.

Receiving the equipment, Dr Kwadwo Sarbeng, Medical Director at KATH on behalf of the CEO, Prof Otchere Addai-Mensah thanked the National Blood Service for the gesture.
He noted that it was a good feeling to have the Service respond to them in such good time after having asked for the equipment presented.
Dr Sarbeng assured the NBS that the equipment would be put in good use so that it can help in blood transfusion services at KATH.
“We are grateful for this gesture and to have such high level blood transfusion equipment means that we can attend to our patients and visitors who require the use of blood”, Dr Sarbeng stated.
Head of Unit:
Dr Leslie Osei, Head of KATH Medicine Transfusion Unit expressed the delight of the unit to having the blood separation equipment.
She noted that KATH had functioning ones but the one the NBS had presented has the best quality.
Having the new equipment, she stressed that jt would enhance the quality of separation of blood components at the unit.
“We thank our industrious CEOs, Prof Addai-Mensah of KATH and Dr Shirley Owusu-Ofori of NBS for always pushing for support for us. So for us at this unit the presentation of this high quality equipment is a welcome development”, the Unit head noted.
