Dr. Banabas Addai Amanfo, a senior lecturer at the Department of Educational Leadership at Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), is calling on the government to conduct a risk assessment for basic school students to protect them from potential injuries.
This assessment, he emphasizes, should focus on students in rural areas who face numerous challenges in accessing quality education, healthcare, and food due to inadequate infrastructure.
Dr. Amanfo’s comments come on the heels of President John Dramani Mahama’s order for engineers within the Ghana Armed Forces to construct a bridge over a stream at Asuokow in the Lower West Akim Constituency of the Eastern Region.
This move aims to facilitate students’ movement to access school, following a viral video clip showing a schoolboy carrying another on his back to cross a stream using a fallen tree.
The renowned educationist revealed that thousands of students in communities at Manso and its environs in the Ashanti Region face similar challenges, yet have not received the necessary attention.
Dr. Amanfo’s plea for a risk assessment underscores the need for proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of Ghana’s basic school students.
