
PresidentJohn Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.
Implemented in 2017 by the Akufo-Addo administration, the Free SHS policy aims to eliminate financial barriers to secondary education by covering tuition, textbooks, boarding, and meals.
During his delivery of the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Wednesday, February, 27,2025, Mahama stated, “I will not cancel the free SHS policy; I am determined to make it better by improving its implementation “
He indicated that this assurance aligns with government’s resetting agendas
While the policy has significantly increased enrollment, it has also faced challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate infrastructure, and delayed funding.
President Mahama acknowledged these issues and pledged to address them.
On the number of students who have benefited from the free shs policy since it establishment.
He revealed that the 5.7m figure was false by the previous, citing that only 3.5m have benefited from Free SHS.
