Adum Bluelight Fire: GUTA Urges Government to Create Satellite Markets to Ease Congestion in Kumasi

The Ghana Union of Traders (GUTA) has called on the government to establish more satellite markets in Kumasi’s central business district to alleviate the pressure on major markets.
This appeal comes after a devastating fire at Adum Blue Light displaced thousands of traders, forcing them to operate on the streets or in existing, overcrowded marketplaces.
GUTA believes that creating satellite markets will provide a suitable space for displaced traders to resume their businesses.
The union’s leadership met with traders on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, to discuss the issue.
Vice Chairman of GUTA in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Clement Boateng, assured traders of the union’s support during this challenging time.
He noted that idea of satellite markets is not new in Kumasi adding that they are looking forward to government taking action. “
In fact, the city already has several satellite markets that complement the Central Market’s efforts in serving clients but we believe more can be done to help traders”
These markets help alleviate some of the congestion concerns in the central business district, which is home to the largest traditional market in the West African sub-region.
By establishing more satellite markets, GUTA hopes to provide relief to traders affected by the fire disaster and reduce the strain on major markets in Kumasi.
The union’s efforts aim to support traders in getting back to business and promoting economic growth in the region.
