Broadcasting death of chiefs without official announcement against Asante tradition – Teacher Kantanka

Cultural Historian at the Manhyia Palace, Mr. Osei Bonsu Kantanka

A Cultural Historian at the Manhyia Palace, Mr. Osei Bonsu Kantanka, also known as Teacher Kantanka, has cautioned journalists and bloggers against broadcasting news related to chiefs without following due cultural processes.

According to him, most stories around renowned palaces, including the Manhyia Palace, have to go through a series of cultural protocols before being shared.

Teacher Kantanka noted that broadcasting the death of paramount chiefs ahead of the official announcement by the traditional council is against tradition.

He emphasized this point on the Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s morning show, Nyansapo, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

This warning comes after some bloggers announced the demise of the Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, ahead of the official announcement.

Teacher Kantanka stressed that traditions must be respected and that journalists and bloggers should not rush into sharing information about chiefs without approval from the right source.

He explained that Asante traditions and culture are sacred, and any individual who wants to publish or broadcast news related to chiefs must verify the information from the right source.

This, he believes, will help maintain respect for the traditional institutions and avoid any potential conflicts or misunderstandings.
