Kumasi Central Prisons: What I saw as gari and beans was simply gari and water – Muntaka

Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, has expressed concern and shock over the substandard meals served to convicts during a visit to the Kumasi Central Prisons.

He described the experience as disheartening, recounting that the food served to the prisoners was far from adequate.

“What I saw as Gari and beans, I thought it was simply Gari and water,” Muntaka remarked, adding that he was taken aback by the lack of proper nourishment provided to the inmates.

The Minister’s visit is part of a broader effort to assess the conditions of various correctional facilities in the country.

Muntaka Mubarak interacted with several inmates during his time at the Kumasi Prison.

However, it was the food situation that left him most troubled.

According to Muntaka, the prisoners’ meals are far from the balanced and nutritious food one would expect, with a plate of Gari and beans appearing to be little more than a watery serving of Gari with no real accompaniment.

He says the Interior Ministry will begin engagement with the President to increase the feeding fees meant for each inmate, as he described the amount as inadequate.

The minister is currently on a tour in the Ashanti Region, engaging various agencies under his sector.
