Drivers Association calls for meeting on fare reduction amid fuel price drop

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has called for a meeting between transport unions and the government to discuss possible fare reductions following the recent drop in fuel prices.

The association acknowledges the public’s demand for lower fares but emphasizes that the calculation should consider multiple factors beyond just fuel prices.

Multiple factors at play
According to Deputy Secretary of the Concerned Drivers Association, Asonaba Nana Wiredu, fare adjustments cannot solely depend on fuel prices.

Speaking on Otec FM’s morning “Nyansapo,” hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng on Wednesday, he stated that other critical factors, including the cost of spare parts and maintenance, also have an impact on operational costs.

“So we believe that a meeting between the government and transport unions is essential to negotiate a fair adjustment that considers all relevant factors,” he stated.

Passenger concerns
Passengers have expressed frustration over the transport unions’ failure to reduce fares in line with fuel price decreases.

Many argue that while fares are automatically increased when fuel prices rise, the converse is not true, leading to perceptions of unfair pricing.

Call for proportional reduction
Asonaba Nana Wiredu said the association is advocating for a proportional percentage reduction in fares based on the decrease in fuel prices.

“By considering all factors affecting operational costs, the parties hope to agree on a fair and sustainable fare adjustment,” he emphasized.

Plea for patience
Asonaba Nana Wiredu urged passengers to exercise patience while putting pressure on the government to facilitate the meeting.

“The transport unions are ready to engage in discussions to find a mutually beneficial solution,” he assured passengers.
