Ghana Meteorological Agency seeks modern equipment for accurate weather forecasting

The Kumasi Office of the Ghana Meteorological Agency has disclosed its need for modern equipment to enhance its weather forecasting capabilities.
Specifically, the office is seeking Doppler radar, also known as Weather Surveillance Radar (WSR), to improve the accuracy of its forecasts.
Equipment Needs
The office requires at least three Doppler radar systems, at an estimated cost of $600,000 each.
According to Senior Officer Mr. Ofori Agyemang, the acquisition of this equipment has become necessary due to climate change, which has made weather forecasting increasingly unpredictable.
Mr. Ofori Agyemang made the disclosure in an interview on Otec FM’s morning show “Nyansapo”, hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng, on Friday, April 2, 2025.
Benefits of Doppler Radar
“With the Doppler radar, the Ghana Meteorological Agency will be able to forecast specific times and areas affected by weather conditions,” he said.
“This will enable the public, particularly farmers, to prepare themselves better for weather-related events,” Mr Ofori added.
Appeal to Government
Mr. Ofori Agyemang has therefore appealed to the government to provide the necessary support to acquire the Doppler radar equipment.
While acknowledging the government’s past assistance in providing other equipment, he emphasized the importance of the Doppler radar in enhancing the service’s forecasting capabilities.
Impact on Farmers
Mr. Ofori Agyemang is optimistic that the acquisition of the Doppler radar will significantly impact farmers. Accurate weather forecasts will help them plan their activities more effectively.
“This, in turn, will contribute to improved agricultural productivity and food security in the country,” he emphatically noted.
