Government to scale up correctional reform efforts in Ghana – Interior Minister

The Interior Minister Hon Muntaka Mubarak Mohamed has disclosed government will scale up plans to transform the Ghana Prisons Service into a modern correctional institution focused on rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration.

Speaking at the Passing-Out Parade of Recruit Course 125, the minister emphasized the need for correctional reform and highlighted key initiatives to achieve this vision.

These initiatives he noted include expanding vocational training, educational programs, and productive inmate enterprises.

The government also plans to scale up support for prison-based ventures such as carpentry, tailoring, agriculture, and industrial operations.

Additionally, the government has directed institutions under the Ministry for the Interior to prioritize purchasing bottled water and toilet rolls produced by the Ghana Prisons Service.

Hon Muntaka added that, the move aims to reduce the financial burden on the state, generate internal revenue, and promote inmate productivity.
The government has reassured the leadership and personnel of the Ghana Prisons Service of its unwavering support for correctional reform efforts.
