A/R: Bronkon New Life residents cry for help over dangerous wooden footbridge

Residents of Bronkon New Life in the Afigya Kwabre South District have appealed for urgent government intervention as a weak wooden footbridge in their community continues to pose a serious risk.
The weak footbridge serves as a death trap for the residents, especially the sick and pregnant women who use the bridge to attend to a nearby health facility.
The community relies on a makeshift wooden bridge to cross the Owabi River, and it becomes inaccessible whenever it rains.
Out of fear, residents are forced to remove the wooden planks whenever it is about to rain, for fear of being washed away when the river floods.
Otec News reporter Elizabeth Gyamfuaa Fosu, who visited the community, said the 20-metre footbridge lacks handrails and structural stability, posing a danger to the users.
Impassable during rains
“When it rains, there’s no way one can cross to the other end. We have to wait until the water recedes, which can take hours or even a day,” one resident lamented.
“Flooding is another major concern, as the area becomes waterlogged during the rains on several occasions, making residents living on the banks relocate,” Ama Atta, a resident, added.
Call for district assembly intervention
The residents are calling on the Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly to construct a strong, permanent footbridge that can withstand heavy rains and serve all community members safely.
By doing that, they believe it will ensure safe passage for all, especially vulnerable groups like pregnant women and schoolchildren.
