Ashanti Regional Minister Convenes Emergency REGSEC Meeting Over Kusasi Chief’s Killing

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has convened an emergency meeting of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) following the tragic killing of the Kusasi Chief in Asawase.
In a Facebook post, Dr Amoakohene described the shooting as deeply disturbing and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. He noted that further directives would be issued after receiving a full security briefing.
The Kusasi Chief, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, who also served as the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region, was shot dead on Tuesday, 23 July, by two unidentified gunmen on motorbikes in what authorities suspect was a targeted attack.
The brazen attack has sparked tension within the community, with residents calling for swift police action and heightened security in the area.
In response, the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched a special investigative team to support local officers in uncovering the circumstances behind the killing.
Speaking to the grieving family, Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe assured them that a thorough investigation was underway and pledged that the culprits would be brought to justice.
“We have launched investigations and I assure you that we will hunt down the suspects,” DCOP Teye-Cudjoe stated. He added that all official protocols have been completed and the chief’s body would be released to the family for burial.
He also appealed to the media to report responsibly and allow the family the space to mourn peacefully.
Evidence Recovered
A police statement revealed that the attackers approached the chief at close range, opened fire, and fled the scene on separate motorbikes. The victim was first rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His body has since been deposited at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo for autopsy.
During a visit to the scene, DCOP Teye-Cudjoe and Regional Crime Officer ACP Ebenezer Boyor, together with a team of officers, retrieved two spent shells believed to have been fired from an AK-47 rifle.
Public Assistance
Describing the incident as a “heinous crime,” the police have assured the public that every effort is being made to track down the perpetrators.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and support the investigation by sharing any information that could help the police.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or reach out via emergency lines: 191, 18555, or 112.
