Ashanti REGSEC bans night motorbike use over Asawasi killings

The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (ARCC) has banned the use motorbikes on roads across the region after 7:00 p.m. until further notice.

It also announced that all unlicensed motorbikes or those without functioning lights are strictly prohibited.

The new security measures follow the shooting and killing of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaasi, at Asawasi on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

This was contained in a press release signed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

“Suspects are increasingly using motorbikes and darkness to their advantage. We must respond decisively,” Dr. Amoakohene said.

In a further move to de-escalate tension, the ongoing inter-tribal football competition has been suspended with immediate effect.

REGSEC has also banned motorbike riders from wearing smocks, citing evidence that they are used to conceal weapons.

“We understand this may inconvenience some, but the safety of lives outweighs all else,” the Minister added.

To reinforce the measures, REGSEC has deployed increased security personnel, including police and military, into known hotspots across the region.

“You will see more boots on the ground. We are serious about restoring calm,” Dr. Amoakohene assured.

The statement urged the public to cooperate with ongoing investigations by providing credible information.

“Our doors are open,” said the Regional Minister.

“We call on residents to assist the police in identifying and arresting those behind this heinous crime.”

The Ashanti REGSEC emphasized its commitment to law and order, reassuring residents that every effort is being made to ensure peace and protect property.

“We will not rest until justice is served,” Dr. Amoakohene concluded.
