Kumasi: Sofoline interchange underpass turns to toilet facility and refuse dump

Residents and commuters passing under the Sofoline Interchange in the Kwadaso Municipality in the Ashanti Region have raised serious concerns about the deteriorating conditions in the area.

According to them, the underpass the interchange has become a center for various unsanitary and unsafe activities.

People report that refuse is frequently dumped under the interchange, contributing to a buildup of waste and an unpleasant environment.

In addition, some individuals use the area as an open toilet, further worsening the hygiene situation.

“The strong smell emanating from the refuse and other activities makes the place unbearable for us when we walk through daily,” a passerby told Otec news reporter, Elizabeth Gyamfuaa Fosu.

In an interview with the reporter, some of the passersby lamented that at night, the presence of weed smokers makes it difficult and unsafe for pedestrians to pass through the area.

Residents also highlight that the area floods whenever it rains, creating more difficulties and health risks for people trying to navigate the space.

Adding to the problem, the site is overcrowded with weeds, making it look neglected and increasing the risk of pests.

“We are calling on the authorities to take urgent action to clean up and maintain the area, install proper sanitation facilities, and ensure safety for all who use the interchange daily,” they appealed to the municipal assembly.
