NRSA issues final warning to district assemblies over unauthorized billboards; sets July 31 as deadline

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a final ultimatum to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country to remove unauthorized billboards or face legal consequences.

This comes after a previous 21-day deadline, set to ensure road safety, was largely ignored by the assemblies.

NRSA’s attempts at dialogue ignored

The Authority noted that it had made efforts to engage with the assemblies to discuss a way forward, including the possibility of extending the removal deadline.

However, many MMDAs failed to attend the scheduled meetings, showing what the NRSA describes as a lack of concern for public safety.

Due to the assemblies’ continued non-compliance and silence, the NRSA has now set a new deadline of July 31, 2025, after which legal action will commence.

The Authority says it is prepared to pursue court orders to ensure the safety of road users is prioritized.

Threats of billboards

According to the NRSA, many of the unauthorized billboards, particularly those placed on road medians and near intersections, obstruct the visibility of road users and create dangerous distractions.

These installations, the Authority says, are significantly contributing to road accidents, especially in urban centers.

Speaking on Otec FM’s morning show “Nyansapo,” hosted by Kwaku Owusu Boateng, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, NRSA’s Public Relations Officer, Pearl Adusu Satecla, expressed disappointment in the assemblies’ inaction.

She emphasized that the safety of Ghanaians should take precedence over revenue generation through billboard placement and warned that the Authority would not hesitate to act in the public interest.
