ACEP empowers journalists to tackle energy and extractive sector issues

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has organized a two-day workshop for selected journalists in Ghana, focusing on energy and the extractive sectors.

The workshop, held in Accra from August 14th to 15th, 2025, brought together 25 journalists from across the country to engage with technocrats from the energy, mining, and petroleum sectors.

Speaking to OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng after the worshop, Betty Owusu, a Policy Analyst with ACEP, said the move aims to empower the media to cover more stories in the energy and extractive sector effectively.

She noted the initiative seeks to address the challenges of limited fiscal literacy within the media landscape, which often leads to underreporting or misrepresentation of complex subjects like national budgeting and sector-specific challenges.

The workshop highlights the importance of investigative reporting and public attention on issues like corruption and fiscal mismanagement in Ghana’s public services.

With significant financial irregularities reported in the energy sector, ACEP’s efforts to build a well-informed media can serve as an effective watchdog over public resource use.

By equipping journalists with knowledge on fiscal governance, public financial management, and corruption detection, ACEP aims to promote evidence-based reporting and encourage the use of official documents to drive fact-based journalism.
This initiative has the potential to enhance transparency and accountability in Ghana’s energy and extractive sectors.
