Konongo residents gripped by fear after gold dealer’s murder, Police yet to make arrests

Residents of Konongo Low Cost in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality are living in fear following the fatal shooting of a gold dealer, as police in the Ashanti Region continue investigations without any arrests.

The victim, identified as Awal, was reportedly trailed by unidentified gunmen who attacked him near his home last Wednesday, shooting him dead on the spot.

Suspected Contract Killing

Assembly Member for the Amerfa Kyekyewere Electoral Area, Samuel Baiden, suspects the incident was a targeted killing.

“Police have visited the scene and begun investigations, while the victim’s body has since been released for burial. Security has also been reinforced in the area. Awal was a calm and quiet man, and I strongly believe this has the hallmarks of a contract killing,” he told OTECNEWS.

He added that the incident has left community members frightened, especially on market days, heightening security concerns.

Appeal for Police Post

While police are yet to confirm any arrests, Mr. Baiden expressed confidence in their ability to track down the perpetrators. However, he appealed for stronger security presence in the area.

“There are many miscreants around, and not much has been done to flush them out. I appeal to the Regional Minister to establish a police post here to help curb criminal activities and restore safety,” he stressed.

Rising Unsolved Cases

The murder adds to a series of unresolved violent crimes in the Ashanti Region. Earlier this year, three mobile money agents were killed by unknown gunmen, while the assassination of two people — including a Kusasi chief at Asawase — forced the Regional Security Council to impose restrictions in an attempt to restore calm.

So far, police investigations into these cases have not yielded any arrests.
