Professor Poku Sampane questions necessity of sending helicopter crash victims’ remains to South Africa

A renowned Ghanaian histopathologist, Prof. Paul Poku Sampene Ossei, has raised eyebrows by stating that Ghana possesses sufficient facilities to conduct a forensic audit on the bodies of the eight individuals who perished in the recent helicopter crash.

According to Dr. Sampane, the country has the necessary human and infrastructure resources to identify the charred bodies, making it unnecessary to send them to South Africa solely for identification purposes.

Dr. Sampane’s Suspicions

Dr. Sampane expressed his concerns in an interview with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng on Friday , suggesting that the government might have sent the bodies to South Africa for reasons beyond mere identification.

He emphasized the need for the public to exercise decorum when discussing the issue and instead focus on mourning with the bereaved families.

Background

The helicopter crash occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of two cabinet ministers, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, as well as six other prominent individuals.

The remains of the victims were flown to South Africa for forensic analysis and identification due to the extreme burns they suffered.
