WAEC shuts Adventist Day SHS center, relocates candidates to Kumasi office over exam malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has relocated candidates from Adventist Day Senior High School in Kumasi to its regional office after uncovering widespread malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The decision was revealed on Thursday (4 September) during a monitoring tour of examination centres in the Kumasi metropolis by Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi.

The relocation was aimed at safeguarding the credibility of the exams.

Although officials are yet to provide additional information about the incident, all 936 candidates have since been reassigned to write their English Language paper under strict supervision at the WAEC office.

“So this has come to our attention of the Regional Director and we are yet to do our investigation…[For now] the students have been bused to the WAEC center to go and take the examination and it is very unfortunate”, said David Oppong, the Kumasi Metro Director of Education.

“The advice to the invigilators and supervisors is that they have to be extra careful…and if we continue to allow and encourage these things in our schools it means we are destroying the nation. So we will ensure that the code of conduct and the rules governing the examination would be applied.

Over 15,000 candidates from 14 public senior high schools in Kumasi are writing this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Mayor of Kumasi visited most of the schools to obtain first-hand information and encourage the candidates.

Examination malpractice remains a persistent challenge in Ghana. Last year, WAEC canceled results at several centres nationwide after similar breaches.

The Kumasi Mayor’s visit to most of the schools is to obtain first hand information and motivate the candidates.
