Ghana’s Parliament appeals to Asantehene for replacement of worn-out Kente cloth in Chamber

Ghana’s Parliament has appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to replace the worn-out Kente cloth artefacts that adorn the back of the Speaker’s seat in the parliamentary chamber.

The appeal was made by the Second Deputy Speaker, Hon. Andrew Asiamah, during a courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace on October 15, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, Hon. Asiamah requested permission from Otumfuo to remove the artefacts as part of ongoing renovation works in the parliamentary chamber.

He noted that the large framed Kente pieces, gifted by the King to Parliament, have deteriorated over the years and need replacement to match the upgraded setting.

“When you enter the plenary chamber of Parliament, you will see two large Kente frames mounted behind the Speaker’s seat. These were gifted to Parliament by the King of the Asante Kingdom. Unfortunately, they have worn out and need to be taken down for restoration,” Hon. Asiamah explained.

Speaker Bagbin, who led the delegation, also used the visit to officially convey his condolences to Otumfuo on the recent passing of the Queen Mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

He explained his earlier absence and reaffirmed the deep respect Parliament holds for the Asante Kingdom.

In a swift response, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II graciously accepted the request and directed his Mpaboahene to oversee the immediate replacement of the Kente artefacts, ensuring that the cultural symbolism remains proudly displayed in Ghana’s legislative house.
