Insipid Black Stars edge past Comoros to qualify for 2026 World Cup as delirious fans serenade Kudus

The Black Stars of Ghana booked their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a nervy 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday night.

Despite an unconvincing display that left many football lovers unimpressed, the solitary goal from star man Mohammed Kudus in the 67th minute proved enough to send the four-time African champions to their fifth World Cup appearance.

Ghana laboured for much of the game, struggling to break down a well-organized Comoros side that appeared determined to spoil the party. With qualification on the line, the packed Accra Sports stadium grew tense as the minutes ticked away without a breakthrough.

But Kudus, who has been the team’s most reliable performer in recent months, once again rose to the occasion. The West Ham midfielder picked up a pass at the edge of the box and curled in a stunning effort past the Comorian goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.

The goal lifted the atmosphere instantly, with thousands of fans waving flags, blowing vuvuzelas, and chanting “Kudus! Kudus! in unison. Some supporters even broke into spontaneous singing and dancing as Ghana held on to secure the crucial three points.

Head coach Otto Addo, while acknowledging the team’s underwhelming performance, praised his players for getting the job done.

“It wasn’t pretty, but qualification was our goal and we achieved it. We’ll correct our mistakes and prepare very well for the World Cup,” Addo told the press after the match.

Ghana’s qualification confirms their return to the world stage after participating in the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 editions of the tournament. The 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, promises to feature a record 48 teams.

For now, fans are simply soaking in the joy. The Black Stars may not have dazzled, but they delivered when it mattered most.
